Abstract :

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are a group of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels. They are known as the first cause of mortality and represent a serious public health problem. Amongst these death cases, over 80% occurs in developing countries, where an increasing rate due to insufficient preventive measures is noticed..

Objectif: Evaluate the level of education of the rural health area of Dschang Health District on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in Health District of Dschang, West Region of Cameroon. Data was collected via a questionnaire administered face to face to the population and analysed with Epi info version 7.6.6.2.

Results: 672 participants among which 62% of females participated to this study. Participants were aged from 18 to 97 years old, with mean age of 38 years old. 88% of participants knew about the existence of cardiovascular diseases, even though the majority (84.46%) had low knowledge of preventive methods. The most known preventive method was the reduction of salt consumption (16.12%) and the less known was the control of blood lipid level (0.25%). Among the participants, 66.7% never desired information concerning cardiovascular diseases.50% of the participants do not practice good preventive methods.

Conclusion/Recommandation:These results showed that participants had low knowledge, attitudes and practice toward the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, hence the need for a sensitization program on risk factors and preventive methods.

Key Words:cardiovascular diseases, prevention, knowledge, attitudes, practices.
