Abstract :

Background: The success of HIV pandemic control depends on the interventions that prevent new infections and those that treat infected individuals. However, disclosure of HIV status and adherence to antiretroviral therapy is still a challenge in Cameroon.

Objectif: To determine the prevalence and assessing factors associated with disclosure of HIV status and adherence to antiretroviral therapy among support group members in Bamenda HD

Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out involving adults above 21 years old living with HIV/AIDS in 3 support groups in the Bamenda Health District, between April and June 2015. A systematic random sampling method was used to select participants. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and was managed and analysed using SPSS 22 software

Results: A total of 389 persons aged 21 to 76 were enrolled in the study. The prevalence of disclosure of HIV status was 96.1% while that of adherence to antiretroviral therapy was 83.0%. The main reason for disclosure was the need for social support while forgetfulness was the main reason for non-adherence. Disclosure of HIV status was significantly associated with age (p = 0.04; AOR = 3.60; 95% CI: 1.06-12.26), occupation (p= 0.01; AOR= 5.22; 95% CI: 1.59-17.16) and residence (p= 0.04; AOR= 4.13; 95% CI: 1.03-16.54). No association was found between disclosure of HIV status and adherence to antiretroviral therapy

Conclusion/Recommandation: Rates of disclosure were high but rates of adherence to antiretroviral therapy were below 95%, recommended by WHO to achieve optimal plasma concentrations. We recommend that client education should be reinforced. Equally, further research needs to be carried out on the determinants of time of disclosure and outcomes of disclosure
