Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) remains a major public health problem in Morocco. Little is known about RTC in our region, GCBH, Morocco. We described the epidemiology of RTC and determine risk factors associated with the severity of the RTC in a public hospital in Kenitra, Morocco. Methods: We describe data collected in the emergency department of CHR Kenitra in Morocco during two-month activity (March-April 2013). Epidemiological and clinical data were collected through a questionnaire. Risk factors associated with the severity of the RTC were assessed using a bi variable analysis; data were analyzed using Epi-Info v.3.5.3.
RTC represent 4% of consultations (n=561). Injuries were caused mostly by motorcycles or bicycles (49.8%, n = 123), and involved young adult males (median age: 32; range: 02-90). Pedestrians (54.01%, n = 303) and drivers (27.8%, n = 156) were the major victims (66.3%). Trauma injuries were mainly of the lower limbs (52.40%, n = 294). Nine (9) deaths were recorded. Thirteen percent (73/561) of the victims had severe trauma. Tourist vehicles and two-wheelers (motorcycle and bicycle) reported the majority of serious injuries with 44.23% and 38.46% respectively. Patients most often (50.9%) arrived within less than a hour. A significant association was found between the severity of the RTC and the victim (user type) (p = 0.0000), the time of arrival (p = 0.0000) province of origin (p = 0.000), gender, male (p = 0.0005) and age, active age bracket (p = 0.04). Conclusion: Severe trauma of the RTC was associated with the type of user, the arrival time, province of origin, gender and age. Since the majority of road traffic crashes are preventable, enforcement of safety rules will help in reducing the occurrence of RTC. Awareness campaigns concerning safety rules targeted at the high risk groups (young adult male, pedestrians and drivers) will also be of help in reducing the occurrence of road traffic crashes. Early recognition and prompt treatment of road traffic injuries is essential for optimal patient outcome.
