Knowledges, Attitudes and Practices of Health Care Providers of the First Level Health Services of Dschang Health District in the fight against malaria

Abstract :

Background: The National Malaria Control Program for several years has organized several trainings to disseminate the new instructions for the fight against malaria. However, according to the activity report from the West Region in 2017, malaria remains the leading cause of morbidity (76.23%) and mortality (20.22%) in the Dschang Health District.

Objectif: Assess the Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Health Care Providers in malaria control in the First Level Health Services of Dschang Health District.

Methodology: A cross-sectorial descriptive study conducted in 45 health facilities (24 Integrated Health Centers, 4 District Medical Centers, 17 Health Centers) sampled in simple random way during the period from March to July 2018, using a questionnaire administered face to face to care givers.

Results: A total of 102 health care providers were interviewed. Mid wives accounted for 30.39% and senior state graduates 26.47%. 36.27% had never benefited from refresher training, 50% correctly difined malaria and 34.31% know that the combination of LLIN+TPI+Environmental sanitation are the means of preventing malaria in Cameroon. Artemisin based Combined Therapy comon practice (28.43%) for simple malaria and injectable artésunate was preferred as first line treatment for severe malaria by 43,30% of care givers, contrary to injectable artéméther (29,49%) and injectable quinine (54.26%) which were   mostly used as second line treatment.

Conclusion/Recommandation: The training of a considerable number of health care providers, regular training supervision and monitoring of the avaibility of inputs to fight against malaria in health facilities can be emitted as the actions to be taken fo solve this problem.
